Announcing our first collaboration with 'Speakers for Schools'

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with Speakers for Schools, enhancing our offer of in-school talks with industry professionals. 

To celebrate the launch of this partnership we are holding a virtual talk with Director, Sarah Gavron on 12 June at 10am, which will enable young people to post questions to her and hear about her journey working in the creative industries. You can watch Sarah's talk live on Microsoft teams through the Speakers for Schools website.

This collaboration forms part of our Careers in Film programme that aims to reach educators and young people with resources and opportunities that promote the varied world of work in the film industry. Our curriculum linked resources have provided activities and lesson plans for educators wanting to integrate careers into their schools curriculum. They give the opportunity for learning about skills used in film industry jobs, introduced through literacy, maths, science and a whole range of other subjects.

Sarah Gavron's feature debut Brick Lane earned her a BAFTA nomination and The Alfred Dunhill Talent Award at the London Film Festival. Prior to this, Sarah's first full length drama, the Dennis Potter Award-winning This Little Life for BBC TV, won her the TV BAFTA for Best New Director, both Royal Television Society and Women in Film and TV Awards for Best Newcomer, and a nomination for the Douglas Hickox award for Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards. Sarah was then selected as one of Variety's ten directors to watch at the Sundance International Film Festival. 

During and after her training at the NFTS, Sarah made many short films that have screened internationally and won major awards. Her feature documentary The Village at the End of the World was nominated for The Grierson Award and won the prestigious Margaret Mead Award. Sarah followed this with Suffragette for Ruby Films, Pathe, Film4 and the BFI, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Wishaw. In 2017 she directed some of Season 4 of Transparent for Amazon Studios. Her latest film, Rocks for Film4, Fable Pictures and the BFI, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2019.

Sarah has dedicated her career to accurately telling female stories and hopes to inspire more young women to enter the UK Film Industry. She is also motivated by using her experience and position to help open doors to those who looking to enter the industry from all backgrounds. The scarcity of women filmmakers in the UK is what motivates her own filmmaking, and her responsibility as a female director. Sarah will be answering questions and discussing her career, future projects and her influences.
