Windrush Day takes place on 22 June, and this year is marking 75 years since the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush - the ship that gave its name to a generation of Caribbean immigrants in the UK.
The Windrush generation are an essential part of British history, one whose contribution and history should be explored and celebrated within all classrooms. To mark this special occasion, we're highlighting some resources and events from some of our favourite organisations.
The Black Cultural Archives' mission is to collect, preserve and celebrate the histories of people of African and Caribbean descent in the UK, and their website houses a dedicated section for schools, housing a number of fascinating workshops for young people. Over A Barrel: Windrush Children Tragedy and Triumph is a new major exhibition from the Black Cultural Archives, providing an interactive experience that explores the profound impact of separation and reunion, isolation and belonging, as well as the cultural and social adjustments these children had to make in order to thrive in a hostile environment.
Meanwhile, TES houses a vast range of Windrush resources, while the National Archives houses a Voices of the Windrush Generation collection, which features first-hand accounts from men, women and children.
If you're in London, you can visit a new permanent statue in Waterloo Station, paying tribute to the thousands of people who arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971.
Finally, our collaboration with The Black Curriculum continues, as we endeavour to follow their lead and Teach Black History 365. The Black Curriculum was founded in 2019 to address the lack of Black British history in the UK curriculum. You can use our Black Lives Matter page, which houses relevant resources, films, and articles to help you embed Black British history and experiences in your lesson plans.
