Short (1-4 activities)
Inspired by the new film, Till: Mother of a Movement draws on citizenship, relationships & sex education and history curriculum topics suitable for learners aged 12+.
This resource includes:
Mother of a Movement PowerPoint presentation
Pupils will be encouraged to channel their learning and reflection into an extended writing task which provides an exam practice opportunity for those studying GCSE history and English language. The activities can be extended via connections to other social change movements supported by additional titles from the Into Film catalogue.
Mother of a Movement timeline
The timeline places the events of Till within their historical context, supporting civil rights and Jim Crow curriculum topics for GCSE history students.
Teachers' Notes
Teachers' Notes support the use of these versatile materials in year-group assemblies, form periods or lessons.
Our resource focuses on the birth of the US fight for civil rights and its continuing legacy today.
Till powerfully documents the true story of the murder of Emmett Till in 1955, and its impact on African Americans across the US. Emmett's mother Mamie channels her grief into a relentless pursuit of justice now credited as a turning point for civil rights. Using clips from Till, this resource explores themes of agency and activism, and will help you guide a thoughtful discussion about the movement kickstarted by the lynching of Emmett Till. Using their speaking, listening and writing skills, pupils will reflect on Mamie's actions, and how we can all help change the world for the better.
All materials have been assessed by our expert safeguarding team and include comprehensive trigger warnings to ensure you can help students feel comfortable navigating potentially upsetting material. Imagery of Emmett Till in his casket is shown in the film, but is not included in these materials. Its impact is explained in the Teachers' Notes and referenced briefly in the PowerPoint presentation.
We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.
