As the new GCSE specifications require the study of 19th century novels by all students, teachers of English are looking for ways to bring these less-immediately accessible texts to life in the classroom, and film is an obvious choice.
This resource looks at Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and the 1999 adaptation starring Patrick Stewart as Ebenezer Scrooge. Comprised of teacher's notes and a series of PowerPoint presentations, the resource provides an in-depth and engaging way into the text, along with generic approaches that can be applied to the teaching of all 19th century novels.
It suggests ways in which film adaptations can be put at the heart of the study of a novel used to build response to the text, to develop literary analysis and to explore language. Importantly, all of the approaches outlined also build students' understanding of film as a form, and of adaptation as an object of study in itself.
Into Film has teamed up with the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) to launch this resource.
