Neil Jordan's biopic of one of the leading figures in the IRA in the early years of the 20th Century portrays him as a complex figure, but certainly a hero who, having inspired republicans to use violence to bring about a united Ireland, eventually emerged as a committed peace-maker. Drama following the hunger strike of Provisional IRA members, centring on Bobby Sands. A tense and relentless meditation on brutality.
