Synopsis

Sarah dreams of becoming a ballerina but when her mother dies, she's sent to live with her estranged father and forced to hang up her ballet slippers. As one of the only white pupils at her new school in Chicago, she struggles to be accepted. Luckily, Chenile and his brother Derek take Sarah under their wing and give her a taste for hip hop. Confronting issues of racism and teenage parenthood head-on, this makes for an unusually direct high school movie.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
