Lionel Shriver's celebrated novel became an equally celebrated, Bafta-nominated film with this intelligent and gripping adaptation. Tilda Swinton is haunting as the mother of a teenage killer, whose crimes are gradually revealed to their full, horrifying extent. By examining the strange bond between disturbed son and guilt-ridden mother, this asks a lot of uncomfortable but hugely important questions about maternal instinct, parental responsibility and the nature of evil. Ezra Miller is utterly chilling as the apparently remorseless killer who seems at war with Swinton from the day he is born - before, even. A provocative, quite daring film that lingers long after viewing.
