Synopsis
In a post-apocalyptic North American landscape now known as Panem, an annual competition takes place. As punishment for a failed revolt in the distant past, each one of the dozen districts which make up Panem must select two tributes aged between 12 and 18 to fight to the death in a barbaric, televised contest. When her younger sister is randomly selected to take place in the 74th Hunger Games, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen of District 12 – the poorest region – volunteers to take her place. She and her district’s fellow tribute, a baker’s boy of the same age named Peeta, are taken to the decadent Capitol where the ruling classes live in extreme wealth. There they learn the importance of political maneuvering and playing to the cameras both before and during the games of which there can be only one survivor. Adapted from the first book in a trilogy of incredibly popular young adult novels, ‘The Hunger Games’ is an extremely engaging adventure which simultaneously explores serious topics such as wealth inequality.
