Synopsis

One of 2012's notable events was the reelection of Barack Obama in the US presidential election. Jump back almost 150 years to 1865, though, and the idea of a black president was unfathomable. The only role black people held in American society was that of slave. With the country torn apart by a devastating civil war, another president, Abraham Lincoln, was trying desperately to force through legislation that would end the slave trade and free America's black population from the tyranny of forced labour. Steven Spielberg's biopic illustrates the monumental achievement and profound legacy of Lincoln's triumph.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
