Before Jackie Robinson, baseball in the US — like much of public life — was segregated on racial lines. In 1947, the young, gifted and black Robinson joined the all-white Brooklyn Dodgers, enduring racist abuse and even death threats to take his rightful place in the major leagues. His treatment is painful to watch - he's told they need a player 'with the guts not to fight back', but this is an ultimately uplifting and inspiring film as Robinson's courage and ability triumph. His importance to the history of the game and of civil rights is such that no other player can today wear his shirt number, 42.
In the US south in the 60s, just after the passing of the Civil Rights Act, a black police officer is arrested for a prominent white citizen's murder.
