Synopsis

Disney's 1964 classic Mary Poppins has delighted generations of kids, yet getting the tale of a magical nanny to the big screen was a nightmare. This charming comedy drama fictionalises studio founder Walt Disney's 20-year struggle to persuade author P. L. Travers to allow the filming of her original novel. Beautifully played by Emma Thompson, the prickly, uncompromising woman refuses to be sweet-talked by Disney, and it's only money problems that eventually take her to Hollywood to negotiate. Even then, Travers digs in her heels, causing amusing headaches for Disney's exasperated creative team with her nitpicking. But touching flashbacks to her troubled childhood gradually reveal the reason for her uncooperativeness.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
