Synopsis

Violet is a sharp-tongued, strong-willed woman, who is suffering from mouth cancer. She is also addicted to prescription painkillers, which cause her to be temperamental and difficult. Her husband, an alcoholic poet, hires a Native American woman to help look after her, before disappearing. Unable to cope, Violet calls her sister and three daughters, who all show up with their families. With the house full of people, Violet characteristically starts off by offending everyone as deep family issues quickly rise to the surface. This darkly comic drama about family dysfunction, set in Oklahoma, is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
