In the early hours of the morning of 28 June 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York frequented by the poorest and most marginalised of the community. Tired of these recurrent raids and the discrimination that underpinned them, frustrations erupted into three nights of spontaneous violent riots in the streets – an event that is considered the birth of the modern Gay Rights Movement. This insightful documentary charts the history of the LGBT community before this movement, from 1920s bohemian cliques to McCarthy-era persecution, combining archival footage and candid interviews with figures including Beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
