Based on the best-selling novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun charts the experience of two wealthy sisters and their families during the violent Nigerian civil war of the 1960s. After embarking on markedly different paths, twins Olanna and Kainene find their lives uprooted by the tumultuous struggle to establish an independent republic within their country. In the ensuing conflict they and those around them find their political and moral beliefs tested by the stresses of war. The film makes significant cuts to condense the epic novel, giving a sharper focus to the story’s romantic themes, but ultimately maintains the powerful contrast between the dramatic sweep of history and personal experience of those living through it.
Contains strong violence and sex, threat and mild language.
