Early on New Year’s Day in 2009 a 22-year-old unarmed black man, Oscar Grant III, was fatally shot in the back by the transit police officer that was restraining him on the Fruitvale BART Station platform in Oakland, California. The killing was caught on mobile phone cameras by bystanders and widely circulated on the internet, sparking outcry. This gripping pressure-cooker drama, based on that true event, reconstructs Grant’s whole day as he grapples with employment trouble, the pull of his old lifestyle, and his effort to reconcile with his girlfriend Sophina, with whom he has a child.
