A group of detention students on a museum tour are taken by a mysterious guide to a secret exhibition containing a mythical book which contains all the stories ever told. There she tells them about a tale which takes place in a Mexican town on the Day of the Dead. The rulers of two underground worlds, the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten, decide to make a wager over which of the two young boys in the town – best friends Manolo and Joaquín – will win the heart of their other friend, María, who they are both in love with. When María is temporarily sent away by her father to Spain in order to become a ‘lady’, Manolo and Joaquín have growing up of their own to do. Joaquín wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a soldier, while Manolo is keen to avoid his own father’s wishes as he prefers playing music over fighting bulls. ‘The Book of Life’ is a culturally rich animation about storytelling, family, and remembering those who have been lost.
