Synopsis

Based on a true story, this powerful drama tackles the practice in parts of Ethiopia of abduction into marriage. Hirut is a bright 14 year-old on her way home from school when she is kidnapped by a would-be husband. Attempting to escape, she mortally wounds the man and finds herself facing the harshest of punishments. A female lawyer takes on her case, but they have to overcome the views of the local community as well as the law. Told with engrossing passion, the film is a complex insight into an archaic patriarchal culture, but always keeps its story and characters grounded in empathy and respect.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
