In 17th century New England, shortly before the Salem witch trials, a newly arrived English family are excommunicated from their Puritan Christian plantation and forced to resettle in a tiny patch of land on the outskirts of a forest. After tragedy strikes, a series of unnerving events causes the family to wonder if a sinister presence may be lurking in the forest, or even if the threat is coming from an enemy within. Genuinely unsettling, this slow-burning psychological horror is influenced by some of the classic titles of the genre. Containing fantastic performances across the board and beautiful production design, the film gets under the skin, but also leaves the viewer with plenty to ponder in its aftermath.
Adapted by Arthur Miller from his play, this story of sorcery and social hysteria based on the 1692 Salem witchhunts remains as potent as ever.
