Milo is a young black boy living in a poor neighbourhood of New York with his brother and no parents. A strange loner obsessed with vampires, he spends his days writing The Rules for Hunting and his evenings preying on human victims. So when new girl Sophie moves into the building Milo initially sees her as prey but her friendliness distracts his craving and the two bond over being outsiders and shared experiences of loss. Realistically shot, this is not your usual teen vampire flick that uses the transformation theme to explore the awkwardness of growing up, but one which goes further to use its horror to call attention to wider issues of race and social deprivation.
