Synopsis

Although his first book, 'Oliver Twist', was an international sensation, Charles Dickens then endured a series of flops that threatened his reputation. Stuck for ideas, and taunted by his rival William Thackeray, Dickens set out to write and self-publish a book he hoped would keep his family afloat. Taking inspiration from characters encountered in the real world, as well as his imagination and a dark secret from his past, in six weeks Dickens created a masterpiece that became 'A Christmas Carol'. Along the way he also helped define the holiday, establishing traditions that remain commonplace today. This warm family drama recounts the story in entertaining, educational fashion, opening up the creative process, highlighting issues around social inequality, and capturing something of the life of one of our greatest authors.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
