In the Holy Land in the first century C.E. a young woman witnesses a charismatic, miracle performing Rabbi named Jesus of Nazareth and is inspired to leave her home and traditional family to become one of his disciples. Jesus preaches that to bring about change within the world, we must question what’s in our own hearts, and that change must begin from within each of us. Having struggled with the confines of the patriarchal society in which she’s been brought up, Mary seizes upon the opportunity to make a difference to both her own and other’s lives, truly believing that change is possible. As a lone woman in the group, Jesus’ followers question her motives and right to join them but as Mary grows closer to Jesus she worries less about gaining their acceptance, focusing instead on love and understanding. As they journey towards Jerusalem, her leader’s teachings become increasingly controversial and Mary finds herself a witness to the final months of Jesus’ life. An engrossing biopic of one of history’s most misunderstood figures.
Controversial film from famed director Martin Scorsese presenting Jesus Christ as a very human figure, prone to fantasies and anxieties.
