Synopsis

It’s 1993 and teenager Cameron is celebrating graduating from college with her best friend Coley, who also happens to be her secret girlfriend. However, when they are caught kissing in the back seat of a car, Cameron is sent to God’s Promise, a gay conversion therapy camp run by two siblings, a converted heterosexual and his strict psychiatrist sister. During her time at the camp, Cameron meets others like her, forming friendships and starting to learn more about herself and her sexuality. However, there is a dark side to the camp, with Cameron struggling to understand her supposed need to be “fixed”. Satirical yet empathetic to its teenage characters, this sensitive film – adapted from a 2012 novel of the same name – sparks conversations about the oppression of LGBT people, with a much-needed young lesbian character at its centre.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
