British writer-director Joe Cornish's long-awaited follow-up to his debut feature Attack the Block arrives in cinemas this week. The Kid Who Would Be King is a family fantasy which fuses the legend of King Arthur with modern, urban life as a young boy named Alex finds the ancient leader's sword, Excalibur. Following this discovery, he assembles his own Knights of the Round Table to overcome a series of quests and find the hero inside himself.
15 year-old Sarah is the sole caregiver to the family and must juggle the responsibilities of looking after her younger siblings and manic-depressive mother with a part-time job and school work. Her difficult circumstances are compounded as she's bullied by her peers and often reprimanded by teachers, but when Sarah attempts stand-up comedy, she finds a creative outlet for her quick wit. Jellyfish is a tough British drama which explores difficult issues that may be highly distressing for some viewers, but also demonstrates valuable insight into the experiences of young carers from working-class backgrounds.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post sees a teenage girl forced to undertake controversial and damaging "conversion therapy" treatment in 1993, based on the 2012 novel of the same name. After being caught kissing her best friend in the back seat of a car, Cameron is sent to a retreat called God's Promise. There, she forms friendships while learning more about herself and her sexuality in this sensitive, empathetic F-rated drama.
