Synopsis

This adaption of Ian McEwan’s novel is set in London and tells the story of Fiona Maye, a compassionate High Court judge working on family law, often encountering ethically difficult cases which take a toll on her personal life, with her marriage to an American professor, Jack, left at crisis point. At this moment of difficulty, Fiona is faced with one of the most difficult decisions she has had to make in the courtroom: forcing a teenage Jehovah’s Witness to have a blood transfusion to save his life. When the two meet, they form an emotional connection that leads Fiona to reflect on her life and some long-buried feelings. This is a compelling and sensitive film which introduces complex ideas of religion, intimacy, and death in an accessible way, while also exploring law and its role in society and personal lives.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
