Synopsis

From the creators of Loving Vincent, this animated artist biopic is inspired by the true story and vividly colorful paintings of Charlotte Salomon, a young German-Jewish woman living in Berlin before the outbreak of World War Two. Charlotte is a gentle and observant aspiring artist, excited to gain a place at art school but troubled by the sense that her family has dark secrets. With the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany, she escapes to the South of France under the guise of going to look after her grandparents there. Charlotte flourishes in the grounds of the sun-kissed villa where they find sanctuary, but as painful family history resurfaces and the Nazis advance, the young woman feels the desperate urge to capture her life in illustrated form. This gentle yet challenging animation offers opportunities to explore personal wartime experiences, mental health issues and the intersection of visual arts and narrative storytelling.
