Shabu disappoints his family when he crashes his beloved grandmother’s car. He now has to spend the long, hot summer on his estate in Rotterdam doing odd jobs to raise enough money for the car’s repair. It’s time for Shabu to learn about the responsibility and maturity that come with growing up, but the cheery fourteen-year-old is easily distracted, especially by his musical career ambitions and a new relationship. There are also restless reminders of violence and poverty on the estate, a silent pressure on his mental health. Heartwarming, funny and full of music, this film offers an intimate portrait of a young person and the African diasporic community that lifts him up and holds him accountable. An absorbing masterclass in documentary filmmaking, artfully exploring character development and narrative within a relatable teenage experience.
Please note that while there are no scenes of violence in this film, there features a discussion about a violent attack and brief depictions of its bloody aftermath.
London set comedy about estranged teenage brothers - one from London, the other Nigeria. A funny reminder of the importance of heritage and identity.
