Over two decades after man’s first voyage into space, the eagerness to explore and learn more about space travel sparked what seemed to be a brilliant idea: why not send a teacher into orbit, to deliver a science lesson to be broadcast live back to Earth? That is how Christa McAuliffe, a 37-year-old schoolteacher, was chosen to be America’s first private citizen to join astronauts on what promised to be an exciting adventure. Using never-before-seen archival footage and audio recordings, including news footage and interviews with NASA engineers, this documentary pieces together the moments leading up to the launch of Space Shuttle Challenger on a cold morning in January 1986. Tragically, the mission did not go as planned. Challenger Disaster: Lost Tapes reflects on the human cost of space exploration, prompting audiences to consider the sacrifices inherent in mankind’s pursuit of knowledge and progress.
