Synopsis

Barbie (AKA Stereotypical Barbie) lives a blissful life of routine in Barbieland alongside various other versions of Barbie, plus a whole host of Kens. Her most devoted Ken (Beach Ken) is only happy when he’s with Barbie and is keen to form an even closer relationship with her, but Barbie is happy with the way things are and values her female friendships. One day, she suddenly undergoes changes in her body and suffers an identity crisis. Seeking answers, she is guided towards the real world where she attempts to find the child playing with her to put things right, with Ken in tow. When they arrive in the real world, where things are so different from Barbieland, they initially struggle to adjust. But while Ken misguidedly learns about patriarchy, Barbie learns about feminism and becomes liberated with her new knowledge. ‘Barbie’ is a funny, fiery and forthright satire which explores the dynamics and media representations of gender.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
