Historically, women have predominantly been depicted as subordinate in most forms of storytelling. Mainstream film has often responded to criticism of this inequality by depicting courageous, feisty, and strong female characters who can save the world just like their male counterparts. Whether they possess superpowers, are equipped with guns and gadgets, or can make their enemies quiver with their fearless personality, these characters are offered as a one-dimensional, often sexualised version of what a ‘strong’ woman is. This short visual essay takes a closer look at this ‘strong female’ archetype within the action and superhero film genre, expanding on how more complexity could be rendered on screen and offering examples of more nuanced female heroes.
