Synopsis

First published in 1928 and written by German soldier Erich Maria Remarque as a semi-autobiographical novel, All Quiet on the Western Front became a landmark of anti-war literature with its nuanced, realistic and humanistic take on World War One. This modern film adaptation is the first to be made by Germans and in the German language, making it a landmark piece of anti-war cinema as well. The story, set in 1917 at the height of The Great War, follows a young and idealistic soldier named Paul Bäumer who is conscripted into the German army to fight on the front lines. Along with his close friends Albert and Muller, spurred on by the promise of heroism and dreams of victory, they march towards their fate with patriotic excitement. However, on reaching the frontline, they discover the true horror of war and its impact on the human psyche. Hugely cinematic and sincere, this empathetic adaptation brings one of modern history's most important stories to a new generation.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
