Synopsis

Spanning 1900-1925 this is a loving adaptation of anti-war campaigner Vera Brittain’s memoir. Raised in a middle-class family in the English countryside, she successfully defies her parents and society norms by winning a scholarship to Oxford University. Her brother Edward introduces her to Roland, who shares her passion for literature and the two inevitably fall in love. However their lives are cruelly disrupted by the onset of World War One, both boys being sent to the front and Vera abandoning her studies to become a nurse. Confronted with the realities of war, we watch Vera adjust to the dramatic shifts in her life and, despite the clichés, provide a much-needed female experience of World War One on film.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
