In a small provincial North Caroline town in the 1960s, a man called Chase Andrews is found dead on the edge of a boggy marshland. Suspicion falls on local pariah Kya Clark, nicknamed ‘marsh girl’, who becomes the centre of a gripping murder investigation. As her trial unfolds, we plunge into Kya’s unusual past growing up fending for herself in the wilderness, surviving through her deep connection to nature and developing a talent for illustrating marsh ecology. Despite being ostracised by most of the townsfolk, Kya befriends local student Tate, who teaches her to read and write, and the then teenage Chase, with whom she enters a fraught relationship. But prejudice and maginalisation conspire to bring about a series of fateful events, in this this coming-of-age mystery-drama adapted from a best-selling novel, exploring themes of identity, belonging, resilience, and the healing power of nature.
