Set in the 22nd century where rising sea levels from global warming have wiped out coastal cities around the world, reducing the world’s population, Mecha humanoid robots are prevalent. In New Jersey, a prototype Mecha child called David is given to husband and wife Henry and Monica Swinton after their son contracted a rare disease and has been placed in an induced coma. Monica initially feels uneasy with her surrogate robot child, but he desperately craves her love and over time she begins to warm to David. Everything changes, however, when Martin is unexpectedly cured of his disease and returns home. Martin becomes jealous of his new sibling and, after a series of incidents involving both boys, their mother becomes fearful of her family’s safety. She drives David into the woods and leaves him there, on his own. David recalls a story he once read – ‘Pinocchio’ – and decides to set off on a quest in search of the Blue Fairy, hopeful that she can make him a real boy too. Initially developed by Stanley Kubrick before his death, and then taken up by Steven Spielberg, ‘AI: Artificial Intelligence’ is a fairy tale about love, identity, and family.
