Synopsis
On its release, The Lion King was hailed as an instant classic from Disney. This animated epic (loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet) is not only beautiful visually, but the story is equally captivating. Lion cub Simba runs away from his pride, believing he caused the tragic death of his beloved father King Mufasa. With Simba away, his evil uncle Scar can become king. But while wandering in the African wilderness, Simba meets Pumba and Timon, two colourful characters, whose friendship gives him the strength to face his destiny.
Watch The Lion King on Into Film+ and discover two short archive films that, like the Lion King, adapt Shakespeare's Hamlet for the screen: Oh'phelia A Cartoon Burlesque is an archive cut-out animation from 1919 that parodies the characters of 'Hamlet' whilst we also include a short from 1910 which exhibits fragments of an Italian production of Shakespeare’s play.
