Synopsis

Set in the repressive suburbia of 50s America, director Douglas Sirk's melodrama revolves around a middle-aged, middle-class woman who falls for an earthy, free-spirited gardener. Soon, she has to choose between bowing to the disapproval of her neighbours and grown-up children, or following her heart. The film works as both a tear-jerking love story and a veiled dig at the laced-up social conventions of the day - and was later hailed by critics as both a fantastic example of Hollywood filmmaking, and a piece of cinema that said something important (and then rarely expressed) about the society from which it came.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
