The American Civil War saw states from the North and South fight over the issue of slavery. This drama tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers - one of the few regiments in the conflict that was made up entirely of black troops. The white abolitionist Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick) is given command of the unit, but he and his troops (which include actors Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman) must address their own prejudices before they can unite into a fighting force.
In the US south in the 60s, just after the passing of the Civil Rights Act, a black police officer is arrested for a prominent white citizen's murder.
