Synopsis

This highly acclaimed Oscar-winning drama focuses on a period of recent history that is still shrouded in secrecy. Set in Berlin in 1984, it is the story of an officer in the former communist East Germany's secret police force, the Stasi. Captain Wiesler is devoted to his job, even though it involves spying on and interrogating his own countrymen. But when Wiesler is given the task of monitoring the famous writer Georg Dreyman, he discovers that he's being used to incriminate the man purely so that a politician can move in on Dreyman's lover. Faced with this abuse of power, Wiesler finds his ideals and loyalty put to the test.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
