When a World War II pilot bails out of his plane without a parachute, he seems certain to die. But a heavenly messenger has made a mistake, and the airman miraculously survives - only to find that Heaven doesn't give up so easily. Combining comedy, romance and drama, this gorgeous technicolor fantasy from director Michael Powell puts the emphasis on celebrating life over fearing death, an important message for an audience that was then newly emerged from a terrible war.
This visually spectacular, dreamlike film from Powell and Pressburger is one of the great classics of British cinema.
