This version of the Superman story, made back in 1978 when the concept of a film based on a superhero comic was almost entirely new, wowed audiences with its spectacular adventures. Some of the effects might seem a little creaky now, but the story will still have you on the edge of your seat. It follows the life of a baby named Kal-El, who is sent to earth from his doomed home planet Krypton by his parents, and then slowly adjusts to life among the human race - before arriving in the city of Metropolis to begin a double life as a timid reporter and a superhero. Christopher Reeve strikes the perfect balance of humour and steely determination as the man in the cape, ably supported by a hugely impressive cast, and legendary John Williams score.
Dark, hard-edged action-adventure that sees the very foundations of the Batman saga start in thrilling style.
