Synopsis

This is the film that shocked France by revealing the crucial role North African troops played in World War Two - and how badly they were treated both during the war and afterwards. It follows a group of Algerian, Tunisian and Moroccan troops off to help liberate the "motherland" they have never seen. Repeatedly sent on suicidal attacks, they are abused by the army high command - although not by the people in the French towns they free. The story is told as a straightforward war drama, with the central characters coming into focus as death whittles down their squad.
