The Others (2001)

'The Others' is a peculiar film which fits perfectly into the genre of a Psychological horror. The director -Alejandro Amenábar-did a splendid job creating this film so it generates feelings of fright, disconcert and confusion by relying on the mental, emotional and psychological states of the characters. This movie definitely is an example that not all films have to have expensive special effects to portray it as terrifying, the atmosphere does a great job of that.

This original screenplay is about the aftermath of World War Two. Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devotedly religious mother, of Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley) moves her family to a large, Gothic house on the English coast awaiting her husbands return from the war. As well as this, Grace is trying to protect her two children from a rare photo sensitivity disease that causes the sunlight to harm them. Anne claims she can see ghosts much to her mother's displease, who does not believe in such thing. Nevertheless, Anne continues to demand that she witnessed the ghosts, making Grace believe that the new servants are displaying tricks on her children, to cause them terror and confusion. However, Grace has a strange experience that leads her to consider that something supernatural has taken place.

The film does an astonishing job of doing what a psychological horror is supposed to do - make the reader feel uncomfortable and uneasy due to the mood of the film. The lighting is very well done because it is fairly dark and dim which leads into the creepiness and the fact that Grace's children can not be open to the sunlight.

Individually, the acting was very well displayed from all around, which means that you had more time to focus on the actual plot. I think that the actors and actresses did a great job of portraying their character to be disturbing or scared, gaining an effect on the audience. Finally, the ending was the best part for me, mainly because it was so twisted and unexpected that I never could have guessed that it would have happened in a million years. Overall, I think that this film has been a positive impact to the collection of films I have seen.
