We're pleased to announce that our brand new learning resource, A United Kingdom: The Power of Unity is now available to download. Linking in with this term's Diversity theme and Black History Month, this resource, aimed at KS3-5 (or equivalent), has been specially designed to accompany the November 25 cinema release of A United Kingdom - Pathé's highly-anticipated inspiring new film from Amma Asante, starring David Oyelowo (Selma), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Tom Felton (Harry Potter).

Developed with National Schools Partnership, this inspirational learning resource is aimed at young people aged 11-18 and supports the PSHE/LLW/PSE/Health & Wellbeing and History curricula, as well as SMSC education. Our A United Kingdom: The Power of Unity resource will immerse students in the post-war period of the British Empire in Africa, while bringing into focus the contemporary relevance of the film's story through building empathy with the key characters and by reflecting on how British values including tolerance, respect for cultural diversity and interracial relationships have developed.

Set during the post-war period of the British Empire in Africa, A United Kingdom tells the remarkable true-life story of Seretse Khama, the King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana) and Ruth Williams, a London office worker, whose love triumphed over oppression and intolerance to lay the foundations for one of Africa's most peaceful and prosperous countries.

The Power of Unity resource will enable students to:

  • Understand the unacceptability of all forms of discrimination, and the need to challenge discrimination and intolerance in the wider community
  • Learn respect for other people and to have tolerance between cultural traditions, faiths or beliefs
  • Know and understand how peoples lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world

The resource includes:

  • Teachers' notes and curriculum links
  • Presentation featuring the film trailer to engage students
  • Character cards to support an interactive activity
  • Student handout to encourage young people to take action

Explore the themes of the film further with our Into Film Recommends podcast below, or log in to SoundCloud to download the podcast and listen on the go.

The Into Film Recommends Podcast Series is also available on iTunes.

Competition

As part of our A United Kingdom: The Power of Unity resource we are also inviting students aged 13-19 to become 'unity ambassadors', promoting tolerance and respect for others in their own schools and communities. Entrants are encouraged to share with us a statement about why they think unity is powerful or an example of when they've seen unity conquer difference, either by email or via social media using #PowerOfUnity for the chance to win great prizes.

This competition closes on December 6 2016.
