This film tells the remarkable true story of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (now modern Botswana), who caused an international outcry in the 1940s by marrying Ruth Williams, a white office worker from London. United by their love, Seretse and Ruth triumphed over every obstacle placed in front of them – from their differing backgrounds and families to the disapproving British and South African governments – to be together. In doing so, they helped transform the poorest country in Africa into one of its most peaceful and prosperous. Highlighting a painful period in British history, the film explores issues around tolerance, cultural diversity and unity with a powerful contemporary relevance, ultimately proving that love can triumph over forces of oppression.
