A big screen experience if there ever was one, Apollo 11 may be the most comprehensive documentary about the 1969 moon landings ever produced. Consisting entirely of archive material and featuring no talking heads or voice-over narration, it tells the incredible story of mankind's first successful expedition to the moon via image and sound clips from the period.
Taking previously unseen archive material from NASA and using state-of-the-art technology to restore it to pristine condition, the film focuses on the build-up to the mission, the journey itself, and the immediate aftermath. Apollo 11 is an engaging, accessible and informative film which breathes new life into the Space Race and celebrates all the men and women behind mankind's greatest moment.
Also out this week is the new musical comedy Yesterday from writer/director pairing Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle. When struggling musician Jack Malik wakes up from an accident after a worldwide power outage, he discovers he is the only person who remembers the iconic rock and roll band The Beatles. After performing their songs and rising to fame and fortune, he must decide whether to leave his old life behind.
Another film making its cinema debut this week is American workplace comedy Support the Girls, set in a Texan sports bar in which all the staff are women who are expected to flirt with the customers. The film, focused on female friendship and gender disparity, follows the manager of this bar, Lisa, as she struggles to get through the day and support her staff. Lastly, Scottish audience can enjoy a fictional retelling of one of their most important historical figures, Robert the Bruce, as he recovers from a hard-fought loss in battle and rediscovers the passion that will ultimately lead him and his country to victory.
City life meets the mythical world of King Arthur when a young boy named Alex, who is bullied in school and disappointed with his ordinary life, finds the ancient leader's sword, Excalibur. Following this discovery, he must assemble his own Round Table, assisted by the legendary wizard Merlin, to fight a great evil. Alex must face a series of quests that push him to be the hero he didn't think he could be in this charming, action-packed slice of British cinema.
Lastly, Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex explores the career of only the second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court. Focusing in particular on her years studying, teaching and being involved a landmark case which threatens to change the course of gender equality, this stirring legal drama of a trailblazing woman who overcame all the odds, a slice of both political and social history that educates and inspires.
