Based on the memoirs of David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy explores the relationship between father and son as teenager Nic becomes addicted to drugs and struggles with his recovery. After moving away from home to start college, Nic's relationship with drugs worsens, but despite the many setbacks along the way, he retains the support of his father and the rest of his family in this raw, sensitive drama.
Mary Queen of Scots examines the relationship between the titular character and her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, in the 16th century, as they vie for power and the crown in this stylish period-drama which examines a crucial moment in British history; three individuals whose lives are significantly impacted by the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man by police in their Brooklyn neighbourhood have their interlinked stories shown from each of their perspectives in timely drama Monsters and Men.
Leading this week's DVD releases is gothic drama The Little Stranger which sees the onset of spooky occurrences within a dilapidated family house once an outsider arrives. Set in 1948, Dr. Faraday visits Hundreds Hall to examine a patient and, though initially dismissive of suggestions around ghostly presences, he soon begins to question himself as events escalate in this adaptation of a 2009 novel.
Documentary-fiction hybrid American Animals blends real-life interviews with fictionalised footage around a true story which took place in 2003 which saw a group of college students attempting to steal valuable texts from the school library in a daring heist; Icelandic black-comedy Under the Tree sees a neighbourly dispute escalate wildly out of control when an overgrown tree becomes the subject of much contention, leading to underhand tactics, manipulation and comic violence.
