Careers Events and Resources November 2024

Each month we're highlighting all the free events, resources and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities you'll need to help you and the young people you support learn more about careers in film, TV, games, animation and VFX.

Keir Starmer's announcement on 9 October 2024 of the new Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC) supports future opportunities in the UK screen industries for homegrown talent. As Amy Jackson, producer of Aftersun, states: "This enhanced tax relief means that as a producer I now have crucial support to explicitly focus on bringing incredible stories by British talent to the big screen."

Perfectly timed with this major boost for the UK film industry, there's lots of exciting news and screen careers opportunities to share this November, including a truly magical careers-focused programme, an all-new webinar for careers professionals and educators, and a suite of additional activity sheets to support your work with young people.

If you're new to Into Film, all you need to access our free resources is an Into Film account. Don't worry, it's completely free and only takes a moment to set up.

Manifest magic and careers success with Wicked

In celebration of the release of Wicked, only in cinemas November 22, we've teamed up with Universal Pictures to create a careers-focused learning programme designed to help young people aged 12-18 fly into their futures with confidence.

By spotlighting the roles of early-career trainees who worked on Wicked, our Wicked Futures: Careers in Film resource offers students inspiring insight into career pathways within the screen industries. Complementary printed packs, including exclusive Wicked materials, are available to the first 400 schools to sign up and there's a chance to win prizes including an iPad and class screening of Wicked in our social-media themed Marketing Wiz competition.

Learners can continue their career contemplation in our Wicked Futures quiz, which matches them to potential roles of interest in the screen industries based on skills and personality traits. The sky's the limit!

If you want to hear from some of the trainees and runners who worked on Wicked, be sure to book a class or year group in to watch our Into Film Careers Panel: Wicked Futures with Speakers for Schools on Thursday 21 November 2024, 10 11am. Book your place here.

Step Into Screen Careers Resources

Students ask a range of questions about the screen industries around who works where in TV and film, which pathway is best suited for them, how to write a screen industry CV, and what it means to be a freelancer. To help you answer these questions, we have added eight new resources as part of our expanding Step into Screen Careers series.

In our latest set of handouts, young people get the chance to look at the different spaces where film and TV crew work through our custom-designed illustrations, and think about the practicalities of entering employment, with a spotlight on the unique aspects of the screen industries like film, TV, and games. There are jobs to suit everyone!

These resources will help you meet careers benchmarks and standards in your settings right across the UK, including the Gatsby benchmarks in England, and can be incorporated into career discussions, meetings with advisors, or existing lessons. Download the full set of 16 resources now!

Discover! Creative Careers Week 2024

Into Film will be running a range of activities in celebration of Discover! Creative Careers Week 2024, on 18-22 November across the UK, offering opportunities and information for young people to gain insight into real job roles and pathways from employers through online and in-person events.

And in Scotland, Scottish Careers Week takes place during 11-15 November 2024. For more information, visit Scottish Careers Week: Shape the Future - Skills Development Scotland.

For this Discover! Creative Careers Week why not encourage your students to try out new career ideas and explore different filmmaking roles including camera operating, lighting, sound, script writing, editing, directing, and more by making their own film and entering it into our Film of the Month competition or the Into Film Awards 2025.

Into Film hosts Film of the Month, a rolling youth filmmaking competition open to young people across the UK (aged 5-19). Any film, any genre, any time of year. The Into Film Awards is our flagship celebration of young filmmaking talent from across the UK. If you need any inspiration or guidance on filmmaking check out our Filmmaking resources which guide you through the filmmaking process from storyboarding to editing and everything in between.

ScreenWorks

If you're working with young people in Northern Ireland, don't miss the latest ScreenWorks opportunities. Funded by the Department for Communities through Northern Ireland Screen and delivered by Into Film, our 3-5 day ScreenWorks work experience placements help young people aged 14-19 learn more about careers in the screen industries with first-hand experience.

Last chance for November events

If you haven't yet enrolled in our Get Into Screen Industries webinar or want to make a last chance booking at our Into Film Festival events, all taking place in November, there's still time! Plus, if you want to expand your knowledge on screen careers even further, the young people you support can benefit from our Pact: Inside Independent Production resource.

Missed us at CareersFest?

At CareersFest, we heard some of the challenges around supporting young people to explore careers in the screen industries when these careers appear unreachable, maybe due to lack of connections, experiences or living outside London. Our careers offer sets out to address some of these barriers, sharing opportunities for young people to build experiences, develop skills and make connections to get a foothold in the industry, wherever in the UK you work.

Further careers resources

To learn more about how you can educate and guide young people toward their dream careers, browse our Careers Hub for even more resources and training to enhance your careers programme, and discover more opportunities for young people. Be sure to check back again in early December for more top events and resources you can use to support screen careers conversations.
