Into Film Clubs
Find out everything you need to know about starting an Into Film Club.
In the Himalayan mountains of Nepal there are small, rural communities, far away from any sort of civilisation, where parents make the decision to send their children to the city of Kathmandu so they can receive a better education. Away from their families for over a decade, some of these children have now reached an age where they must return to their communities and the parents they were separated from. New documentary Children of the Snow Land chronicles this visually stunning and inspiring film about the perseverance of the human spirit.
Belgian drama Girl follows a 15 year-old transgender teen determined to become a professional ballerina, tackling important subjects such as gender identity and mental and physical well-being. Anxiety and mental health is also explored in Simon Amstell's LGBT comedy-romance Benjamin, in which the titular London-based filmmaker struggles with his neuroses before the premiere of his latest work. Lastly, animation Harvie and the Magic Museum utilises a unique style to tell a fantastical, video-game inspired adventure about a boy and his friends who are transported to the magical caverns below an abandoned museum.
Leading the DVD releases this week is festive animated comedy The Grinch, which traces the history of this notoriously grumpy creature, telling the story of how he became such a sourpuss in the first place. Voiced by the inimitable Benedict Cumberbatch, this bright and colourful take on the well-known story combines tremendous fun with gentle messages around family, kindness and community. The Grinch also opened last year's Into Film Festival where children were encouraged to donate to local food banks to combat the "Grinchmas spirit".
Free Solo; Peterloo; The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
A variety of home releases this week including Oscar®-winning documentary Free Solo, a dizzying, nail-biting account of a professional rock climber's attempt to scale the 900 metre vertical rock face known as El Capitan. Also available is period epic Peterloo, Mike Leigh's detailed retelling of the 1819 Peterloo massacre which became a defining moment in British history. Finally, another festive release, Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a live-action adaptation of the popular Nutcracker story in which a young girl is transported to a magical land.
