The twelfth (and final) instalment in the X-Men series of films and a direct sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix focuses in on the character of Jean Grey. After a daring mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into an entity know as Dark Phoenix, giving her untold psychic power. As she learns to come to terms with this new strength, whilst also wrestling with her own demons, she begins to spiral out of control, putting the X-Men team, and the entire planet, at risk of annihilation. This intensely emotional story, familiar to readers of the comics, is one of female empowerment and making difficult choices regarding your family and friends.

Late Night; Papi Chulo; Eating Animals; Last Summer
Also heading to our screens this week, the new American comedy Late Night, written by and starring Mindy Kaling as well as featuring a distinctly comedic turn from the legendary Emma Thompson as a hard-edged late-night chat show host. Drawing its humour from the current conversations surrounding diversity in the workplace, Late Night is a socially-conscious and sweet look into the world of live television.
Papi Chulo is another warm and likeable comedy that does not shy away from important conversations, this time focusing on mental health, sexuality and migration. When Sean's long term relationship with an older man ends, he develops a friendship with Ernesto, a Mexican migrant worker. Sean eventually becomes too attached to Ernesto and begins to pay him for his companionship, pushing their relationship into uncomfortable territory.
Natalie Portman narrates new pro-vegan documentary Eating Animals, which looks at the negative impact of factory farming across the world and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Focusing on topics such as animal rights, pollution and the overuse of antibiotics and hormones, it is a documentary looking to have a positive impact on the way we view our environment.
Lastly is Welsh period drama set in the 1970's concerning a group of boys whose idyllic summer turns to tragedy, leaving them to deal with the devastating consequences. A film that explores trauma in a beautiful rural setting and also understands the nuances of the passionate friendships which exist between young people.
New to Order on DVD
Stan & Ollie
The fictional biopic Stan & Ollie, charting the twilight years of two of comedy's biggest legends, arrives on DVD this week. Laurel and Hardy were two of the biggest stars of the Hollywood era but we join them as they embark on what looks to be their final stage tour of Britain, struggling to come to terms with the potential end of their careers. Played with much gusto by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly respectively, this affectionate biopic is a sweet-natured tale of a long-term creative partnership and a lifetime of friendship.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part; Vice
Also out for home cinema, the sequel to one of the more original animated films of recent years, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, continuing the adventures of Emmett, Lucy and Batman as they try and take down invaders from outer space, threatening their Lego utopia. Lastly, Dick Cheney biopic Vice takes a potentially dry, political story and whips it into a comedic frenzy, featuring an unrecognisable Christian Bale as corrupt Vice President Dick Cheney as he serves under the Bush administration throughout some of America's most infamous historical moments.
