Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are two of the most recognisable names and faces in the history of British cinema, and together they made up one of the all-time great double-acts. Arguably the world’s most famous screen pairing at the height of their success, this biopic follows their latter career days in 1953. Several years after the duo’s last film, with their celebrity status on the wane and the nation still recovering after the devastating effects of World War Two, Laurel and Hardy embark on a tour of the UK to help boost publicity for an upcoming project. Appearing in seaside towns and music halls all across Britain, there’s initially little interest in their performances, though a spree of local appearances soon capture the public’s attention. But as they head towards their big London finale, Hardy’s ill health threatens to derail their comeback. ‘Stan & Ollie’ is a poignant, affectionate tale of two genuine screen icons.
Chaplin's first 'talkie' was also the first major anti-fascist film of its era portrayed through slapstick and satire, with a touching message.
