As the autumn weather begins to set in, there's never been a better time to head to the cinema and enjoy the wealth of riches currently on offer. This week sees a long-delayed but eagerly anticipated science fiction epic, an sequel to one of 2017's zaniest animations, a new film from one of cinema's most beloved directors and a musical adaptation that has been captivating audiences on stage for years.
Safety is of course at the forefront of everyone's mind right now so make sure to check out the specific guidelines for your local cinema before visiting. Meanwhile, many cinemas have used lockdown as an opportunity to improve and renovate their venues so that we can all enjoy the best possible cinema experience.

Dune
Delayed due to the pandemic and now finally reaching our cinema screens, this star-studded fantasy film is both an action-packed blockbuster and an intricate political tale of power and greed that often mirrors our own, earthbound reality. Adapted from the seminal science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, Dune is an epic story set in the unknown reaches of space. Paul Atreides is a gifted young nobleman in House Atreides, one of the most powerful families in the galaxy and although he is born into great privilege, he is soon thrust into a complex and dangerous political war over ‘spice', the galaxy's most valuable and precious commodity. Paul's dreams and visions of a mysterious woman set him off on a mythical journey in which he must come to terms with the fact that his destiny may be out of his control.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; The French Dispatch; Dear Evan Hansen
Babies have a habit of taking over the household soon after they arrive and in the 2017 film The Boss Baby, this concept was taken quite literally. In this sequel set 40 years later, the now-adult Templeton brothers have grown apart and live their separate lives, barely speaking. Soon, however, older brother Tim is shocked to find that his daughter, Tina, is a Boss Baby like his brother Ted, setting off a chain of events that sees Tim and Ted going undercover at a mysterious and dangerous school. Jaunty, charming and wacky, The Boss Baby 2: Family Business also takes a look at what it means to grow up into an adult and the importance of sibling relationships.
For something appealing to older audiences, The French Dispatch is the newest film from much-celebrated director Wes Anderson, whose signature visual style has earned him fans all over the world. In this film, which he describes as "a love letter to journalists", we are treated to three eccentric stories of love, crime and revolution told by a group of American journalists living in the strange town of Ennui-sur-Blasé. This clever film about the importance of good writing is full of recognisable faces, often hilarious and manages to capture the wonder of experiencing a culture different from your own.
Lastly is a hugely popular musical that originated on stage and now finds itself on the silver screen. The story concerns Evan Hansen, a young man suffering from social anxiety, who finds himself thrust into the spotlight after one of the boys at his school commits suicide. Finding himself drawn deeper into a web of lies, Evan must navigate this emotional minefield whilst overcoming his fears. Dear Evan Hansen is a timely coming-of-age story which explores topics around mental health, social media, and the importance of family in all its forms.
